About BPI
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed what small island states already knew: when global supply chains fracture, the Caribbean waits longest and receives least. Barbados imported almost all the medicines its population needed.
That dependency cost the country during the pandemic and continues to do so today.
Barbados Pharmaceutical Inc. was established in 2023 by the Government of Barbados, operating under the Ministry of Health and Wellness, to address that structural vulnerability directly. BPI's mandate is to develop the pharmaceutical ecosystem needed to attract investment, build local manufacturing capacity, and position Barbados as a production and distribution hub for CARICOM and beyond.
Our Vision
By 2035, Barbados will be a trusted regional hub for high-quality pharmaceutical manufacturing, life sciences innovation, and regulatory excellence, advancing equitable access to essential medicines across the Caribbean and the Global South.
Manufacture
Local production of essential medicines, starting with IV fluids, scaling to ARVs, diagnostics, and for NCDs.
Distribute
A regional hub logistics model that puts medicines where they're needed, faster and cheaper.
Build
The regulatory, workforce, and institutional foundations that sustain a pharmaceutical sector for generations.
