What’s at Stake
BPI is enabling the entry of Barbados-manufactured ophthalmic lenses into Nigeria and wider African markets by building partnerships that facilitate access to high-quality intraocular lenses.
Lenstec, through BPI and AMA Medical (Nigeria), is opening a new route, creating a bi-directional Caribbean-Africa trade route, underpinned by BPI's MOU with Nigeria's PVAC and the health ministry agreement between Barbados and Nigeria.
Where We Stand Today
Following the June 2026 mission to Nigeria , BPI is supporting Lenstec’s market entry by advancing commercial and regulatory readiness. This includes partner alignment, market assessment, technical documentation, product-sample shipments, partnership agreements, and preparation for product registration in Nigeria.
What Success Looks Like
Success would mean an established viable pathway for Lenstec’s ophthalmic products to enter the Nigerian market, supported by a clear regulatory strategy, qualified local partners, and a commercially sustainable distribution model. Long-term, the initiative could provide a platform for wider expansion across African markets and demonstrate the potential for Barbados-based life sciences companies to grow through South-South trade.
This initiative is paving the way to bridge trade corridors between Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America, leveraging both AfCFTA and CARICOM frameworks to reach an estimated 1.8 billion people across these regions.
