Building Caribbean pharmaceutical workforce capabilities through digital training and manufacturing academies.

The Caribbean has strong universities, colleges, and technical institutions, yet there is no coordinated workforce development pathway designed specifically for pharmaceutical manufacturing and life sciences.
As the region seeks to attract investment and expand local manufacturing, the availability of industry-ready talent has become a significant constraint on growth.
BPI has partnered with EMPOWER to develop a future-ready workforce ecosystem that aligns education and training with industry demand. Together, we are exploring competency-based training, digital learning, stackable credentials, pharmaceutical manufacturing academies, and partnerships across government, academia, and industry to build the skilled workforce needed to support a competitive pharmaceutical sector.
The initiative is currently in its first phase, focused on assessing workforce demand, mapping existing tertiary and technical training capacity, identifying priority skills gaps, and engaging government, industry, and academic stakeholders. These findings will inform the design of future training programmes, institutional partnerships, and pilot initiatives that will ultimately support workforce development across Barbados and the wider Caribbean.

Success means creating a coordinated workforce pipeline that prepares Barbadians and regional talent for careers across pharmaceutical manufacturing, quality assurance, regulatory sciences, supply chain, diagnostics, and related life sciences fields. The initiative will establish clear competency pathways, strengthen collaboration between education providers and industry, and create scalable training programmes that evolve in line with the sector's needs.
