What’s at Stake
The Caribbean and Latin America rely on complex international supply chains that drive higher logistics costs, longer delivery times, and greater vulnerability to global disruptions.
BPI is working with PAHO and the Ministry of Health and Wellness to position Barbados as a strategic distribution hub for essential medicines, vaccines, and medical devices procured through the PAHO Revolving Fund, strengthening regional health security while improving the efficiency and resilience of public health supply chains.
Where We Stand Today
PAHO has completed a technical assessment of Barbados' suitability to host a Regional Supply Hub, with findings presented to the Ministry of Health and Wellness. The assessment identified significant opportunities to improve regional supply chain efficiency, including an estimated 83–89% reduction in transport-related emissions through shipment consolidation. The Newton Life Sciences Hub has emerged as the preferred location, with work now focused on securing Cabinet approval, financing, and the detailed design of the facility.
What Success Looks Like
Success means Barbados serves more than 40 countries across the Caribbean and Latin America through a modern supply hub that reduces logistics costs, shortens delivery times, and improves access to essential health products. Initially focused on vaccine stockpiling, the hub will expand over time to support a broader portfolio of medicines and medical devices.
