Building the regulatory, workforce, and research foundations a Caribbean pharmaceutical sector needs to stand on its own.

In Practice

Barbados is well-positioned to become a regional hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing, innovation, and investment, as CARICOM represents a $1.5–2.0 billion pharmaceutical market, with 85–90% of medicines imported.

Growing demand from non-communicable diseases, responsible for about 80% of deaths in the Caribbean, further underscores the need to strengthen local and regional manufacturing. BPI exists to turn that opportunity into something durable, through a coordinated strategy that includes industry development, workforce training, regulatory enhancement, research and clinical-trials infrastructure, and international partnerships.

BPI is doing this by dedicating capacity to industry policy development, incubating projects to tackle workforce and digital innovation challenges, and facilitating conversations with key stakeholders to shape the regulatory environment needed and beyond.
